Temporary Staff

A “temp” is someone hired at Stanford 20 hours per week or more for no more than six months total in a calendar year.

“Casual” employees may work for an indefinite period of time over several years, but their hours must average less than 20 per week.

School of Engineering policy limits both temporary and casual staff to an annual cap of 900 hours. They are not eligible for benefits.

Hiring

To hire someone into a temp/casual position, the hiring manager should first interview candidates to confirm qualifications and then check references. In the cases of an administrative hire, Marlys LeSene, the BioE Staffing Administrator can work with the hiring manager to help select candidates from a temp agency.

When a candidate is identified, the hiring manager should complete the department’s Hourly Hire Form and submit it to the department staffing administrator at least two weeks before the requested start date.

If the candidate has not worked at Stanford in the past year, he or she will need to successfully pass a background check before hire. The department staffing administrator will put through the request for a background check.
