Innovation & Creativity Award
Kayla Jimenez, Administrative Services Manager
The Innovation and Creativity Award recognizes an individual who introduces innovative ideas or solutions that significantly improve departmental operations or services, demonstrates creativity in problem-solving, and promotes a culture of continuous improvement.
Kayla is known as an exceptional leader and mentor, highlighting her “ability to unite the team and create an inclusive, positive work environment that significantly impacts those around her.” She serves as a role model for continuous growth and actively encourages her team to enhance their skills. Kayla has been instrumental in elevating the events and communications teams by closely collaborating with the Program Director and Science Program Manager to achieve high-quality results. In her role as an Administrative Services Manager, Kayla has identified and addressed operational gaps, improving departmental efficiency. Additionally, she has implemented professional development strategies that have transformed administrative team meetings into more meaningful and productive sessions.
Leadership & Mentorship Award
Katy Bechler, Director of Student & Academic Affairs
The Leadership & Mentorship Award recognizes an individual who shows exceptional leadership qualities and guides team members toward success, acts as a mentor and role model, provides support and guidance to colleagues, and fosters a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
Katy is thought of as an “incredible manager and a true role model, known for her warmth, kindness, and thoughtfulness.” She approaches every situation with sensitivity and patience, making her a supportive and encouraging leader. Katy creates a safe, balanced work environment where team members feel comfortable seeking guidance, knowing she'll offer thoughtful support that leaves them feeling empowered. Her dedication to professional growth is evident in her commitment to new learning opportunities and regular check-ins. Through both challenging and joyful times, Katy leads with grace, inspiring her team to grow and thrive. “She’s not only a skilled leader but also the team’s biggest cheerleader, fostering a culture of confidence, balance, and mutual support.”

Marly LeSene, Program Director, Communications and Initiatives
The Outstanding Achievement: Going for the Gold Award recognizes an individual who achieves significant accomplishments that have a positive impact on the department, demonstrates excellence in their field of expertise, produces high-quality work, and is recognized by peers and supervisors for their contributions and achievements.
Marly’s nominators describe her as the “stealth culture creator of BioE.” Marly has made a profound impact on our department's journey toward greater justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Her contributions to the JEDI program have been transformative, fostering a more inclusive community with a deeper understanding of social justice. Marly’s commitment and leadership have earned her recognition at the University level, placing her on the IDEAL Honor Roll for both 2023 and 2024. In JEDI sessions at staff meetings and retreats, she creates a welcoming and open environment where team members feel encouraged to engage with the material thoughtfully and share their own experiences. “Marly’s authenticity and openness inspire us all to bring our genuine selves to these conversations, making her a respected and invaluable leader in this work.”
