BioE PhD student Camilo Ruiz publishes groundbreaking paper using AI for drug discovery

In a Nature Communications paper, Ruiz et al. present a machine learning system that outperforms state-of-the-art by up to 40% in discovering drug-disease treatments. For the first time, it can also help explain and personalize these treatments. For example, the system can help explain why treatments for deadly diseases like cancer only cure a fraction of patients. In the future, the method could be adapted to explain why some patients have more severe side effects to treatments like the COVID vaccine.
