Job Opportunities in Bioengineering
FACULTY POSITION
Biomedical Technology Design
Stanford University Department of Bioengineering
The Department of Bioengineering at Stanford University, which is jointly supported by the
Schools of Medicine and Engineering, seeks applicants for a new faculty position. We are
searching for bioengineers with the skill and experience to be inventors and designers of new
biomedical technologies.
The search is open for a tenure-track faculty appointment at the junior level (Assistant or
untenured Associate Professor). The appointment will be at the rank commensurate with the
applicant’s experience. Applicants are expected to have a doctoral degree in bioengineering,
biomedical engineering, biophysics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or any
related discipline. We encourage applications from physician inventors, particularly those with
an engineering background.
The new faculty member is expected to develop outstanding bioengineering research and
teaching programs. We are open to applications from individuals working in any area of
biomedical technology innovation, including medical devices, diagnostics, imaging and imageguided
procedures, biomaterials, medical robotics, bioMEMs, biomolecular and tissue
engineering, synthetic biology, design process, and other areas. We are particularly interested in
individuals who have invented technologies that have been translated into patient care. The ideal
candidate will be able to combine innovation in creating new technologies with the high-quality
research expected in a department with outstanding basic science and engineering research and
teaching programs.
A strong commitment to graduate and undergraduate teaching and advising is essential.
Teaching responsibilities will include the development of a new undergraduate program in
biomedical technology design and participation in the graduate education program. The
supervision of doctoral students and academic advising of students at all levels is expected.
Applicants should submit a letter containing a brief statement of interest, a curriculum vitae, a
statement of research and teaching interests, copies of two representative publications and/or
patents, and the names and addresses of five references. Candidates are requested to ask that
references send letters directly to the search committee. These materials should be sent to:
Biodesign Search, c/o Jocelyn Hollings, Department of Bioengineering, Stanford University,
Clark Center Mailcode 5437, Stanford, CA 94305; or via electronic mail to bioe-search@lists.stanford.edu with “Biodesign Search” in the subject line.
The review of applications will begin on September 1, 2008, and applicants are strongly
encouraged to submit applications by that date; however, applications will continue to be
accepted until the position is filled.
Stanford University is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to increasing the
diversity of its faculty. It welcomes nominations of and applicants from women and minority
groups, as well as others who would bring additional dimensions to the university's research,
teaching, and clinical missions.
